Ragwort. Effective Control.

The primary concern regarding common ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) is its high toxicity to livestock, especially horses and cattle. The plant contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that cause irreversible liver damage. It is particularly dangerous when it is cut, dried, and accidentally mixed into hay or silage as livestock lose their ability to detect the plant's naturally bitter taste in dry forage.

 

Official regulation has changed, with bodies like Natural England largely stepping back from directly policing or accepting individual complaints regarding harmful weeds. This leaves control relying heavily on the goodwill and cooperation of neighboring landowners, which is not always forthcoming.

 

Ragwort control often fails due to a combination of improper removal techniques, aggressive natural seeding and shifting land-management policies.

 

Primary Reasons for Failure.

Opportunistic Growth in Bare Patches.

Ragwort seeds thrive on bare soil. Overstocking pastures, poaching (trampling by livestock), or failing to re-seed heavily grazed areas creates ideal open ground for the seeds to germinate without competition from established grasses.

 

Improper Cutting or Mowing.

Slashing or topping ragwort is often counterproductive. While it temporarily removes the yellow flowers, damaging the main crown causes the plant to switch from a biennial to a perennial habit, allowing it to re-grow and produce more seeds in subsequent years.

 

Difficulty in Safe Disposal.

Ragwort remains highly toxic to livestock even when dead, dried, or pulled. Disposing of it properly requires burning or secure off-site removal, which can be logistically challenging and time-consuming, often leading to it being left on muckheaps or field margins where it continues to pose a threat.

 

Prolific Seed Dispersal.

A single ragwort may produce 150,000 seeds. While the majority fall close to the parent plant, they are easily blown by the wind or spread by waterways, meaning uncontrolled patches on neighboring verges can continuously re-infest managed pasture.

 

Leaving Root Fragments in the Soil.

Ragwort has a very deep, tough root system. If the plant is hand-pulled but a small portion of the root is left behind, it can regenerate, creating new, stronger rosettes.

Incorrect choice and use of herbicides resulting in partial control (knocking the top off) is another reason for incomplete control especially when coupled with a poor understanding of the growth and development of the plant.
