Winter wheat seed rate
There are various opinions upon what the correct seed rate should be. The factors influencing this are soil texture, calendar date, method of establishment, previous crop and many more.
The calculation of a standard seed rate for the field in kg/ha is straight forward. What is then required is a method of refining this either through mechanical means or some form of electronic control. However if the standard seed rate is incorrect then refinement has little financial merit.
What is often overlooked for soils in the clay textural grouping is that the standard seed rate has a survival of historically 60% (+/- 5 %.)
In 2019 autumn and overwinter conditions were poor. This year we carried this legacy into our autumn drilling. Consequently this and other seasonal factors have resulted in quite a wide variation in the current plant population’s that have been achieved.
