Slug control in Oil Seed Rape
Metaldehyde has been the main pesticide used to control slugs in oilseed rape and wheat in the UK for many years but the sale and distribution of existing stocks of Metaldehyde will expire on 31 December 2020, disposal, storage and use of existing stocks is to expire on 31 December 2021 meaning there will be a switch to other forms of control
AHDB (Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board) work reports an estimated annual yield loss caused by this pest at 4%
My own experience shows that left untreated the slugs will “have the lot” more especially during this critical establishment phase.
Therefore the application of pellets from drilling onwards is essential to guard against this pest.
