With Navy beans, as mentioned in our blog article on the 3rd June we still need one or more varieties to suit the UK environment. This year’s variety screen looks well and has so far produced some promising growth and development as seen in these photographs.
Pre em herbicides appear to cause some “distortion” to the emerging crop plants. As far as weed escapees are concerned the old favourites such as Fat hen appear to find their way through suggesting harvesting difficulties if not a yield penalty.
Looking along the rows and viewing the additional post emergence method of weed control I am not sure how many growers will relish the idea of this old fashioned approach – the hoe!
