Many fields did not get reseeded in Autumn 2019, the weather stopped this. Consequently, new fields producing good silage swards are few and far between. However, after saying that there are a few that made it!
Silage bulk is very important yet so is quality. Some or all of this is down to the ensiling process, yet fertiliser policy plays its part too.
High nitrate in grass at ensiling contributes to elevated ammonia. Ammonia (NH3) results from protein breakdown during preservation, reducing feed quality and palatability.
Best to match fertiliser inputs carefully to anticipated harvest date.
