Bean Enhancement Metrics


The area of each crop type changed significantly for the 19/20 season.

Spring wheat accounted for 20% of my field walking area, spring barley 20% and winter wheat 17%. I had no growers who planted winter beans in 2019 but 10% of my crop area went into beans in March 2020.

I took some photographs of a block of autumn 2019 sown winter beans the other day. They did not look very special, too low a plant population, poor spring growth, too few pods and too many weeds. By comparison I have some winter beans planted in March 2020 which if nothing else look green by comparison.

Doing the maths, stems / m2, pods per plant, seeds per pod and thousand grain weight the yield potential from spring planted winter beans looks acceptable and much better than the winter sown crops I have seen.

Stems / m2 = 40 40

Pods per plant = 6.5 40 * 6.5 = 260 pods

Seeds per pod = 3.8 3.8 * 260 = 988 seeds

TGW of beans = 500 500 * 988 = 494 g

One ha = 10,000 m2 10,000 * 494 g = 4.94 t/ha

Deduct 20% for error in calculation = 4.00 t/ha
