Vernalise me!

No one wants to have wheat seed left in the shed when autumn comes to a wet end. What to do with it? A more learned man than myself once told me, “best thing is to tip it on a bonfire and burn it.” A little extreme perhaps but a useful thought to keep in the back of your mind.

Recently I stopping to talk to a client whilst he was carrying out field work. At the end of our discussion he pointed out something he had seen over the hedge, as you do!

Ten minutes later, I popped in and had a look. Sure enough I could confirm his suspicions.

In this case just one field drilled to winter wheat this spring. No idea which variety but I do know it has not vernalised. What about a silage crop? In this instance I don’t think so, it’s not tall enough.
